Sometimes weekends kind of suck

|
Sometimes weekends are a blessing that I couldn't do without. Then again, sometimes weekends are the hell that exists somewhere between death and some kind of cheap, cut-rate, proctology exam.

Don't get me wrong - I'd much rather be at home on the weekends than at work. Anything is better than being at work - even the cut-rate proctology exam. As a matter of fact I think they're comparable.

On the weekends at my house my wife generally works. We've done this for years. It makes it kind of hard to plan weekend, family getaways, but it is a necessity. We only have one car ( thank goodness it's payed for ) and the thought of making monthly car payments again just doesn't sit well with me. So, you can say that it's a matter of choice that she works weekends and I'm at home with the kids and the cats and the dog.

Sometimes it works out pretty well. The kids will generally play outside if their friends are around. That usually goes on for most of the day - or at least until I unlock the door and let them back in. However, there's always the days that the weather isn't cooperating. On days like that it seems that our house is the preferred location to play inside. I've never turned them down but I have kicked them out for raising hell. Sundays are spent picking up the house and doing any laundry that has accumulated over the weekend. The kids know they have to clean their rooms before they go outside and they're pretty good about getting it done.

So what sucks about it? Well some weekends there's things going on. With spring on the horizon these things will be picking up pretty soon. This weekend was a kind of foreshadowing of things to come. Since we have one car, if the kids have athletic events, me and the kids will have to get up at 5:30 AM and take the wife to work and then pick her up when she calls to have us come get her. Don't forget, I have to chauffeur the kids to their events and inevitably I end up getting roped into doing some volunteer thing. I often end up feeling as if I have accomplished nothing at all the entire weekend. This weekend it was a birthday party. The party wasn't until 3 in the afternoon, but still getting up at 5:30 just so I could have the vehicle available to me seems kind of ridiculous. I suppose I could always do something about it - like get another car - but then I wouldn't have anything to bitch about would I?
